NACHES — Defense remains the name of the game for La Salle’s girls soccer team.

With its 10th shutout in the last 11 matches, the Lightning blanked Naches Valley 3-0 in a SCAC clash Tuesday afternoon at Ranger Field.
“They just keep wowing me back there,” La Salle coach Anne Newell said of her stout defense. “We’re young but real solid on the field.”
La Salle’s offense got what it needed in the first half when junior Ally Hernandez punched in her 20th goal of the season two minutes before the break.
Sophomore Savannah Bonny then put the match away with a pair of goals in the second half, scoring in the 54th and 64th minutes.
La Salle has allowed only one goal in conference play and that came last Saturday in a 2-1 win over Highland.
Junior co-captain Katie Vickers is the old one of the bunch on the back line, covering the center in front of sophomore goalkeeper Chelsea Adkins. Freshman McKenzie Andringa has been an “amazing” addition to the squad, according to Newell, playing opposite either Olivia Maiocco or Lauren DeGooyer, both sophomores.
Tuesday’s match was basically La Salle’s farewell to the SCAC and 1A competition. The Lightning is 10-0 in conference with only a forfeit win from Granger coming on Oct. 18.
After a non-league match at East Valley on Thursday, La Salle (13-1) will prepare for an Eastern Washington 2B district tournament. Four teams will vie for three berths in the first-ever 2B-1B state tournament.

Naches Valley (7-3, 10-4) has dropped three of four but is still in good position to host a first-round match in the SCAC district tourney, which starts Oct. 28.

I think the parents of LaSalle are rude and they need to learn to keep their mouths shut. It gets really old when they think they can say some of the stuff they say. Especially when the parents say they are getting to physical when Soccer is a CONTACT SPORT! If you don’t want your child being hit in a CONTACT SPORT then they are playing the wrong sport!
Congratulations to La Salle for a good season, it has been and honor to compete against them in the SCAC and good luck in the future.
Also I would like the Yakima Herald to recognize the Highland Girls Soccer team and their outstanding defesive efforts this season with now 11 shutouts, the most of any team in the valley.
I think that *Shirly* is out of line. I am a player and yes it is very difficult to play in contact sports, but it’s not just La Salle spectators that are “rude.” Many parent spectators of other teams are equally as loud and it’s not fair to just blame one team. Frankly, most players can’t even hear their parents.
And yes, it is a contact sport, but when elbows are illegally being thrown and other dangerous activity (especially slide tackles that are not legal) should be taken into consideration as a violation. SOmeone could seriously be hurt.
