Sideline Smitty: No need for 83-0 score

October 10, 2008 by YH-R Sports

Q: What’s your reaction to Lakes beating Sumner 83-0 in football last Friday?

A: It stinks, and I haven’t bothered to ask for an explanation because the only one that would satisfy me is a malaria outbreak at halftime left Sumner with only 10 players. When the score is in danger of getting into the 60s, just start handing the ball off to your slowest lineman and run at the same hole every play behind reserve linemen. Or practice quick kicks.

Q: Who was the substitute from a Spokane school who had a huge game in the state basketball tournament in the ’50s that old-timers still talk about?

A: Dennis Reilly of Lewis & Clark of Spokane scored 28 points in 27 minutes in a losers’ bracket win over Stadium in 1956. Reilly had never started a game until the tournament.

Q: West Seattle beat O’Dea a few weeks ago in football for the first time in school history. What Metro League teams have defeated powerhouse O’Dea since it joined the league?

A: O’Dea joined Metro in 1977. Here are the Irish’s league losses: in 1979, Lincoln (closed in 1981), Cleveland, Franklin; in 1980, Queen Anne (closed in 1981), Seattle Prep (beat Irish in regular season and playoffs); in 1981, Chief Sealth, Rainier Beach, Lakeside; in 1982, Franklin; in 1983, Bishop Blanchet; in 1984, Bishop Blanchet; in 1985, when current coach Monte Kohler arrived, Lakeside; in 1986, Chief Sealth, Rainier Beach; in 1989, Eastside Catholic (although the Crusaders were not a league member at this time); in 1991, Franklin; in 1993, Bishop Blanchet, Eastside Catholic, Rainier Beach; in 2001, Rainier Beach; in 2004, Rainier Beach; and in 2008, West Seattle.

Q: Do you realize what a roll Eastlake golfer Kevin Penner is on?

A: The senior is on fire. Last week in nine-hole matches he shot a 5-under 31 at The Plateau Club (his home course) and followed it with a 4-under 32 at Bear Creek Country Club.

In all eight outings this fall, he has shot par or better. Penner won the 4A tournament as a sophomore and tied for third as a junior. This past summer he was second in the Seattle Amateur.
