Yak men bounce back
December 31, 2008 by YH-R Sports
SEATTLE — Skyler Gillispie scored 16 points to lead a balanced attack and Yakima Valley bounced back from a disappointing loss with an 86-82 win over Seattle on Wednesday.
The No. 2-ranked Yaks, who lost a 20-point lead and the game, 86-84 to Shoreline on Tuesday, improved to 11-2. They are scheduled to host South Puget Sound at 4 p.m. Monday in a makeup game, and will open Eastern Region play at home Jan. 10 against Wenatchee Valley.
“This one had a better ending,” YVCC coach Ray Funk said, “but I’m telling you, we still have a lot of work to do. My assistants have been telling me that I shouldn’t expect too much after an 11-day layoff, and that does make a little bit of sense.”
Yakima Valley lost another 20-point lead, having held a 44-24 advantage in the first half.
The Storm (3-7) rallied to take an 82-81 lead in the final minute, but Nico Sandoval drove the lane and kicked the ball out to Rico Wilkins for a go ahead 3-pointer with about 10 seconds left. Following a Seattle turnover, YVCC added to its margin.
Sandoval finished with 10 points, eight assists and seven rebounds. Ben Wilson and LeMar Anglin scored 13 points each and Wilkins finished with 11.
The Storm’s Nuk-Chin Douglas led all scorers with 24 points, hitting 5 of 10 3-pointers.

Making progress
December 31, 2008 by Roger Underwood

Davis' Herman Mendoza looks for an opening in the second quarter of Tuesday's basketball game at Selah.
Henderson leads young Pirates past Selah
SELAH — It is never an even progression for a team as young as Davis, even if the team is as quick as Davis and plays as hard as Davis.
So it’s comforting for coach Eli Juarez, especially when the Pirates’ youth is showing, to find the poised and persistent form of his only senior starter, Les Henderson.
With Henderson scoring 12 of his 22 points during a seven-minute span of the third and fourth quarters, Davis fought off Selah 71-60 in a Tuesday night non-league game in Carl Kellman Gym.
“When you need a score,” Juarez said, “Les is the type of player who can get to the foul line or finish or, as he did tonight, do both.”
And the Pirates (3-4) needed Henderson at his best to maintain the upper hand on coach Merle McLain’s hustling Vikings (2-3), who got 27 points from Nick Longmire and 19 from Brett Dodeward.
“We took a step forward tonight,” Juarez said, “especially coming off a loss at Sunnyside that wasn’t our best game. Our young kids committed themselves to making some improvement tonight, and that was encouraging to see.”

Selah's Ricky Escalera (22) drives against Davis on Tuesday.
Especially given that beyond the 6-foot-2 Henderson, Davis started two juniors and two freshmen. And especially since Longmire, a 5-11 junior transfer from Olympia, had his shooting eye dramatically focused.
Longmire missed only once in his first seven field goal attempts, including two 3-pointers, and scored all 14 of his team’s first-quarter points.
“Our kids kept saying, ‘We’re on him when he gets to the (3-point) line,’” Juarez said, “and we kept telling them, ‘That’s not enough.’”
Pirate junior Herman Mendoza was nearly Longmire’s scoring equal through the first two quarters, totaling 15 of his 19 points, and while Selah made repeated charges from a 15-point first-half deficit, Davis always answered.
Often the point man was Henderson.
When a Longmire long ball brought the Viks to within 53-48 early in the fourth quarter, Henderson drove hard to the basket, scored through a foul and then made the free throw.
After a Longmire 2-pointer, Henderson posted up near the basket, scored again while being fouled, and again converted from the line. Davonte Luckett, who along with point guard David Trimble (14 points) were the Pirates’ starting 9th-graders, followed with a free throw for a 60-50 lead with 3:26 left.
Selah got no closer than seven points thereafter.

Davis' Davonte Luckett, center, drives between Selah's Brett Dodeward (30) and Mark Valencourt (20).
“These games are getting us ready for league,” Henderson said. “We had a tough practice after the Sunnyside game, and I think we did make some progress tonight.”
Juarez, meanwhile, tossed kudos toward McLain and his players.
“It says a lot for them and their coach that they’re playing as well as they’re playing, and playing as hard as they’re playing,” he said. “I would say they’re an up-and-coming team.”
