Girls basketball: Top-Hi beats No. 1 East Valley

February 5, 2012 by

TOPPENISH, Wash. — Just beating East Valley would be reason enough for Toppenish’s girls basketball team to celebrate.

Beating an East Valley team ranked first in the state made Saturday’s upset all the more satisfying.

Osiris Rodriguez scored 19 points, hitting five of Toppenish’s 11 3-pointers, to lead the Wildcats to a 48-44 victory over the previously undefeated Red Devils.

“If we can get hot (from 3-point range) we’re pretty tough. We got hot tonight,” Toppenish coach Akil White said of his team’s 11-for-22 effort from long distance.

Having clinched a district berth with Friday’s victory, White said his team was relaxed Saturday.

“We’re playing with house money,” he said. “They just went out and played loose and had fun.”

Three-pointers played a pivotal role in Toppenish’s game-changing 18-6 third quarter that put the Wildcats up 38-31. The Wildcats hit four treys in the period — two by Rodriguez.

East Valley tried to rally in the fourth, but Toppenish’s young squad managed to hang on.

“It was a big win for us,” said White, who didn’t know when the last time Toppenish beat East Valley.

Tara Bremer added 10 points for the winners. Ashlee Bethancourth led East Valley with 12 points.

State bowling: Selah winds up 8th

February 5, 2012 by

UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. — A week after dominating the Baker games, Selah was simply average Saturday and the Vikings were unable to move up the leaderboard in the Class 3A-2A state bowling tournament at Narrows Plaza Bowl.

Selah finished eighth in the eight-team division, although the Vikings’ final total was better than two of the eight Class 4A teams in the two-day event.

“When it was all over, I told them that, considering we were the only 2A team in the tournament, we have to consider our season was pretty good,” Selah coach William Foster said.

It was the second straight state trip for Selah, which took seventh last season.

After Friday’s six individual games, the Vikings were eighth with 6,498 pins. They added 2,123 more in Saturday’s 14 Baker games to finish at 6,498. Their Baker game average was 151.6, which Foster said was “right about our average” for the season.

Selah’s best Baker game was a 189, and it had five games of at least 173, but the Vikings also had three games of 125 and a low of 117.

“We had some good ones and some bad ones (Saturday),” said Foster, whose team averaged 178.7 in seven Baker games at district, including three 200-plus efforts. “They kind of woke up (after a slow start Saturday). They had fun.”

Mark Morris ran away with the 3A-2A title, finishing with 8,074 pins — 600 more than runner-up Wilson, and 358 more than 4A team champion Battle Ground.
