Friday, the Yakima golfer recorded his third career hole-in-one — with all of them coming on that very hole, this time using a 6-iron on the 170-yard shot.
Betty Gilmore witnessed the shot.

Wanderscheid qualifies for US Junior Amateur
July 2, 2009 by YH-R Sports
YAKIMA, Wash. — Zach Wanderscheid continues to have a busy — and successful — summer.
The senior-to-be at Goldendale High School recently qualified for the 2009 United States Junior Amateur Championships and was one step away from a spot in the Junior World Championships.
In the U.S. Junior Amateur sectional June 22 at Manito Golf and Country Club in Spokane, Wanderscheid had a two-round total of even-par 142 to take top honors, a shot ahead of Richland’s Scott Kim and two in front of Spokane’s Garrett Howard.
All three advance to the national championship July 20-25 at the Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, N.J.
Notable winners in this event include three-time winner Tiger Woods, Johnny Miller, Gary Koch, and David Duval. The defending champion is Kevin Tway, son of PGA Tour golfer Bob Tway.
In the sectional qualifier for the World Junior Championships on June 23 at Canyon Lakes Golf Club in Kennewick, Wanderscheid tied for top honors with Jake Hanson in the Boys 16-17 Division, with both shooting 71.
That advanced him into the one-day, two-round regional qualifier, which was Wednesday at Tumwater Golf and Country Club. Final results were not available, although Wanderscheid shot 78 in his morning round, trailing the leader by four shots.
The top four finishers advance to the finals in San Diego, a week before the U.S. Junior Amateur.
In other qualifying news:
• Keith and Frank Crimp from Ellensburg came up short in their efforts to qualify for the U.S. Senior Open, July 27-Aug. 2 at Crooked Stick Golf Club in Carmel, Ind. Keith Crimp shot an 81 at the qualifier at the Bellingham Golf and Country Club, while Frank Crimp fired an 82.
Amateur Tom Brandes led the field, shooting 3-under 68, with former PGA Tour player Jeff Coston second at 69 to grab the two available spots.
Dan Whitaker 27th in State Am
PULLMAN, Wash. — Dan Whitaker got off to a strong start, shooting 71, but couldn’t maintain that pace and wound up tied for 27th in the 83rd Washington State Men’s Amateur Championship June 23-26 at Palouse Ridge Golf Club.
The Cle Elum golfer finished with a 300 total and in a group one shot ahead of a group that included brother Ryan Whitaker.
Keith Crimp from Ellensburg was tied for 49th with a 308 total.
Austin Hurt from Bainbridge Island closed with a course-record 7-under 65 to erase a nine-shot deficit and beat Drew Reinland by a stroke. Hurt opened with an 81 and then went 69-69-65 for a 284 total. Reinland shot a closing 74.
Guzman gets ace at Cherry Hill
Raul Guzman recorded his first hole-in-one during a round at Cherry Hill Golf Course in Granger. The 17-year-old aced the 78-yard eighth hole using a gap wedge.
Jim Reid and Marc Gjestrum witnessed the shot.
Ellis shoots 59 in CW PGA event
Nick Ellis fired a round of 59 during Monday’s Central Washington PGA event at Veteran’s Memorial Golf Course in Walla Walla.
Ellis, a junior at Washington State University and Eastmont High graduate, had 10 birdies, two eagles and one bogey to finish 13-under par. He started with nine birdies and an eagle through 11 holes.
Ellis was playing as an amateur member off the Wenatchee Country Club team in the event.

YAKIMA, Wash. — Don Fisher of Yakima recorded the fourth hole-in-one of his golfing career on Sunday, acing the 145-yard 16th hole at SunTides with a 7-iron.
Fisher’s feat was witnessed by playing partners Bob Baker, Larry Bender and Tracy Ylitalo.
Eglin wins 3rd straight City title
June 18, 2009 by Dave Thomas
SELAH , Wash.— For the second straight year, Nancy Eglin and Pat Martin brought their duel for the Women’s City Tournament championship to the final hole.
Eglin, clinging to a one-shot lead both times, won last year when Martin narrowly missed a short birdie putt to tie.
This time, Eglin was in control of her fate as they reached the 18th green at the Yakima Elks Golf and Country Club, albeit in the form of a tricky pin-high 15-foot par putt to avoid a playoff with Martin, who put her chip inside a foot from the hole.

Nancy Elgin lines up a shot on the 16th hole of the Yakima Elks Golf and Country Club Thursday, June 18, 2009 during the Yakima Ladies City Golf Tournament. Elgin shot close to the hole then putted in for par to move ahead of Pat Martin by one stroke, which she held to the end to win. (Andy Sawyer/Yakima Herald-Republic)
But Eglin confidently stepped up and rolled in the shot to edge Martin by a shot.
“They were few and far between,” Eglin said, referring to her ability to make those-length putts during the 54-hole event. “I was just thankful I didn’t leave that putt short.”
By making it, Eglin finished with a 6-over 80, giving her a 235 total and her third straight victory in the event, putting her in some elite company.
“I thought I might be able to get into a playoff, but she stepped up and made that putt. There wasn’t much I could do,” said Martin, who matched Eglin’s 80 to finish at 236.
That nail-biting finish capped a back-and-forth final round in which each member of the final threesome held the lead at some point Thursday.
“It was fun; we all went back and forth,” said Chris Scacco, the third member of the group who forged into the lead after back-to-back pars on Nos. 10 and 11.
“Then I went brain dead,” she said, alluding to her finish that left her with an 83 and five shots behind Eglin.
Back nine struggles at 15 and 16 ended up relegating Martin, an eight-time champion, to her third straight runner-up finish to Eglin.
Martin had moved ahead by a stroke after making a tricky downhill putt on 14, but then bogeyed both 15 and 16, while Eglin went par-par to start a solid all-par finish over the final four holes.
“I hit a couple of errant shots … and Nancy played great; she was very consistent,” said Martin, who has now combined with Eglin to win the past six City titles.
With her victory, Eglin became just the eighth player in the 75-year history of the tournament to win at least three straight crowns. It was also her fourth victory overall, breaking out of a tie with Marie Clark and Terry Powell, and moving one behind five-time winners Trudi Inslee and Suzanne Monson.
Eglin said she hasn’t really thought about the company she’s joined, saying she’s just happy to be playing well after having arthroscopic surgery on her rotator cuff last November.
“The last two years, I did not know how bad it was and how much it affected my swing,” she said. “It just feels good to be pain free.”
And also to be back in the winner’s circle.

YAKIMA, Wash. — While the women will crown their City champion today, preparations have started for the men’s version of the event, which will feature two important changes this year.
The most significant change to the Yakima Amateur Invitational is that it will return to a 54-hole event after being just two rounds last summer.
Also, the event has been pushed back a couple of weeks to mid-August, with play on three different courses — Black Rock Creek on Aug. 14, SunTides Golf Course on Aug. 15 and the Yakima Elks Golf and Country Club on Aug. 16.
The entire field will play the same course each day.
The entry fee is $125 with a field limit of 144 players. Deadline for entry is Aug. 10.
Golfers at least 16 years old from the above mentioned courses, along with Apple Tree, Desert Aire, Ellensburg Country Club, Mount Adams, River Ridge, Yakima Country Club and Westwood West are eligible to compete.
Entry forms and payment can be turned in at Black Rock Creek, SunTides or the Elks, or to Doug Hearron or Reider Nettleship.
