Kent rallies to win title

INDIANAPOLIS — Marshall Kent was pretty darn good all week, but the Yakima bowler saved his best for last.

Striking out in the 10th frame of his final match-play game, Kent overtook Matthew Gasn 269-265 to capture the U.S. Bowling Congress Junior Gold Championship on Friday.

“This is overwhelming, and I can’t even describe it,” Kent said in a story posted at www.bowl.com.

The victory earns Kent a spot on Junior Team USA 2011.

Closing out the tournament in dramatic style, Kent trailed Gasn entering the 10th frame. Had Gasn hung one, the resulting bonus pins awarded for wins in Friday’s 16 match-play games would’ve given Gasn the overall title.

Instead, the 17-year-old Kent coolly rolled three strikes to earn the title.

“On the last shot, I saw the 7 pin stand up for a second, and when it fell, it was the best feeling in the world,” Kent told bowl.com.

Adding to the drama was that Kent’s closing game was the second-highest among Friday’s 256 scores, trailing only a 279, while Gasn’s 265 was the day’s fifth-best game.

Kent, who entered Friday’s play in second place, collected 3,441 pins (a 215.1 average) and won 10 of his 16 matches to earn an additional 200 pins (20 per victory).

That gave the West Valley High senior-to-be a total of 10,018 pins covering 46 games for the week, an impressive 217.8 average.

Gasn, who had a 9-7 record Friday, finished with 9,996 total pins.

Kent’s big finish was the capper to another strong day.

In addition to that 269, he also had a 255 game, making him just one of two bowlers among the final 16 to post two 250-plus games Friday. Kent also had games of 243, 242, 236 and a pair of 233 games, and he failed to break 200 in just five of the 16 games, with only one of those falling under 185.

Brittni Hamilton won the girls title, winning by nearly 250 pins over Addileen Pointer. Hamilton had a total of 9,800 pins and a match play record of 11-5.

Yakima’s Kent rolls on at national bowling event

INDIANAPOLIS — A big closing kick pushed Marshall Kent into second place heading into today’s final games in the Junior Gold Championships at Woodland Bowl.

Kent topped 200 in each of his final five games, averaging 227.4, punctuated by a 268 in his final game, to move within 35 pins of leader Jacob Kent (no relation).

Marshall Kent, a senior-to-be at West Valley High School, has a total of 6,377 pins after 30 games, a 212.57 average. Jacob Kent has a 6,412 total and a 213.73 average.

Marshall Kent’s final five games were 221, 218, 205, 225 and 268.

The event started with 981 boys, with the top 150 advancing after 18 games. The field was then narrowed to 16 after Thursday’s bowling.

Those 16 will finish with 16 games in today’s mach play finals.

The top four finishers will qualify for the 2011 Junior Team USA squad, with another four at-large selections from the remaining finals qualifiers.

Bowlers in this event are competing for $125,000 in scholarships.

YOUTH BASEBALL

West Valley wins 11-12 title

NACHES — Jake King hit a two-run homer and was the winning pitcher as West Valley beat two-time defending champion Greater Richland 2-1 in the title game of the District 12 Little League 11-12 tournament on Thursday.

King pitched 51?3 innings with eight strikeouts and hit his home run with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Wyatt Martz earned the save, recording the final two outs with two runners on.

West Valley advances to state in Elma and after a first-round bye will open play on Sunday.

Team members are Jimmy McDonald, Justin VanDeBrake, Brett Williams, Brian Stein, Kasey Wyckoff, Wyatt Martz, Kyle Chauvin, Noah Morrow, Trevor May, Peyton Schafer, Eli Valdez, Jake King, and Zane Orvald. Kevin VanDeBrake is the manager and the coaches are Klayton Wyckoff, Jim Williams and Eric Stein.

East Valley also state-bound

Having won its district title on Saturday, East Valley’s 9-10 Little League team is preparing to open play in its state tournament on Sunday in Shoreline.

With a bye through Saturday’s first round, East Valley will open Sunday at 2 p.m. at Shoreview Park against the Centralia-Walla Walla winner.

Team members are Ben Albrecht, Noah Alexander, Wyatt Bronkhorst, Devin Cossey, Dylan DeBlasio, Henry Gargus, Zach Himes, Haley Harrington, Shane Maybee, Chase Oldham, Adam Raab and Max Hagler. The team is coached by Dane Alexander and Jason Hagler.
